Die Beschlagnahme der Römerstadt-Siedlung durch US-Truppen Ende März 1945 und das Entstehen einer amerikanischen Kleinstadt im Frankfurter Stadtteil Heddernheim

Nach dem Einmarsch amerikanischer Truppen am 29.März 1945 wurden alle Wohnungen der Römerstadt-Siedlung beschlagnahmt und mussten von den Bewohnern geräumt werden. Sie konnten für sich selbst nur das Nötigste mitnehmen.

Die „neuen“ Bewohner der Siedlung waren zunächst polnische Zwangsarbeiter, die in Frankfurter Betrieben arbeiteten und in primitiven Unterkünften wohnen mussten. Für einige Wochen waren sie nach ihrer Befreiung einquartiert worden. Danach erst zogen US-Kampftruppen – wie eine Fallschirmjägereinheit in die Mithrasstraße und Im Burgfeld – in die Einfamilienhäuser und großen Wohnhäuser ein.

Die Römerstadt-Siedlung war für mehrere Jahre Militärgelände mit Einzäunung und Wachtposten von der Straße An der Ringmauer bis nach Praunheim hin zur Straße Im Burgfeld. Für Deutsche war dieses Gebiet „Off Limits“ – zur Sperrzone geworden. Nach und nach entwickelte sich dort gleichsam eine amerikanische Kleinstadt mit verschiedenen Einrichtungen. Zur Versorgung errichtete die US-Army mehrere provisorische eingeschossige Gebäude. Drei auf der unbebauten Seite der Straße In der Römerstadt zwischen Hadrianstraße und Am alten Schloß: zwei Kantinen und eine Einkaufshalle mit Vorratslager, die seit vielen Jahren leerstehend noch heute vorhanden ist. Eine dritte Kantine wurde auf der Niddawiese „Am Bubeloch“ errichtet, deren Fläche heute als „Kerbeplatz“ genutzt wird. Außerdem gab es noch weitere Einrichtungen:

  • eine eigene Müllabfuhr mit einer Müllkippe (die „Kull“) im nördlichen Gebiet von Heddernheim (Titusstraße/Cohausenstraße), die bereits seit 1935 geschlossen war und wieder eröffnet wurde
  • eine Feuerwache mit Feuerwehrstation (Am Forum)
  • eine Kapelle in Holzbauweise am Wiesenhang zwischen Hadrianstraße und Am Forum
  • ein Kino in der Römerstadtschule (Panzer Theatre), der heutigen Geschwister-Scholl-Schule
  • ein großer Appellplatz für die US-Soldaten auf dem für die Römerstadt-Siedlung geplanten „Kirchplatz“, neben dem Friedhof zwischen In der Römerstadt und Am Forum. Dort stand noch der Sockelbau für ein Denkmal der Gefallenen des Ersten Weltkriegs. Er war umrahmt von vier Rosskastanien. Bis Kriegsende diente die Freifläche für NS-Aufmärsche und Fahnenappelle. Das Kriegsopferdenkmal aus der Vorkriegszeit war nicht errichtet worden.

Durch Straßen- und U-Bahnbau verschwand die große Fläche. Von den Rosskastanien blieben dadurch bis heute nur zwei erhalten. Dazu kamen noch außerhalb der „Kleinstadt“:

  • ein eigenes überregionales Telefonnetz („APO“)
  • ein Radiosender („AFN“), der 1943 als Frontsender der US-Soldaten für ihren Vormarsch in Europa gegründet worden war. Er sendete zunächst ab Ende März bis Ende Juni 1945 mit mobilen Sendeanlagen vom IG Farben-Haus, dem US-Hauptquartier von General Eisenhower. Ab Juli 1945 hatte er seinen festen Standort im Höchster Schloss.

Damit war im Sperrgebiet für das tägliche Leben fast alles vorhanden. Für  amerikanische Soldaten und Familien in Frankfurt war später an der Eschersheimer Landstr. /Ecke Adickes-Allee ein großes Kaufhaus, die sogenannte „PX“ entstanden. Auf dem Nachbargrundstück gab es dazu noch die „Commissary“ für den Bedarf an Lebensmitteln. Bezahlt wurde dort mit „Script Dollars“, der Währung der „US-Army“. 
Hinzu kam die Anstellung deutscher Hausangestellter sowie Heizer, die die Koks-Heizungen von jeweils zwei Einfamilienhäusern bedienten. Die Anstellung erfolgte durch die Zivilverwaltung des „Headquarter Francfort“ der US-Army nach ärztlichen Untersuchungen und Arbeitsverträgen mit Probezeit.
Gegen Ende der 40er Jahre entfiel die Umzäunung. Die Siedlung und Wohnungen wurden stufenweise freigegeben, so die Wohnblöcke in der Hadrianstraße und die Häuser Im Burgfeld. Zur Freigabe gehörte dann am 6. Juli 1955 die Übergabe des Feuerwehrstützpunktes Am Forum 51 (US Army Fire Department – Frankfurt Subarea – Fire Station No. 1) an die Berufsfeuerwehr der Stadt Frankfurt. Erst 1956 waren schließlich alle beschlagnahmten Wohnungen für die deutschen Bewohner wieder frei geworden.

An den Autor/an die Redaktion, mein Bruder Hans (Jahrgang 1940, im Burgfeld 41 aufgewachsen, seit 1955/56 [?] bis heute wohnhaft Am Forum 51 [im Artikel als Sitz der US-Feuerwache erwähnt], Klassenkamerad von Klaus Gülden) hat mich (Jahrgang 1944, 1955 mit Eltern ins freigegebene Burgfeld 41 gezogen, ab 1956 bis 1971 Am Forum 51) auf den Artikel aufmerksam gemacht. Sehr verdienstvoller Bericht, der über viele Fakten informiert, die ich bisher nicht kannte, und außerdem viele persönliche Erinnerungen wachruft und Verknüpfungsmöglichkeiten herstellt! Beispiel dafür: Das ´´Aufmarschgelände´´ in der NS-Zeit war für mich und andere Jungens aus der Römerstadt lange Zeit Bolzplatz, schräg gegenüber der Wohnung am Forum 51, viele Jahre, bevor das Gelände der Erweiterung der U-Bahn und der Schnellstraße mitten durch die Römerstadt zum Opfer fiel.   3. Wäre schön wenn das mal als Ganzes zu lessen ware. Sehr interessant. Wo steht den im obigen Atrikel etwas von einem Aufmarschgelände. Und von wem ? Wo steht etwas von der Beschlagnahme der Römerstadt? Passt die Überschrift zum Artikel ? Würde gerne mehr darüber erfahren und lesen.

  4. Meine Schulzeit verbarg sich hinter der Kaserne. Römerstadt Schule. Jeden Morgen lief ich an der Umzäunung ses Geländers vorbei und manchmal haben Soldaten zugewunken und paar Wörter gesprochen. Einer fand mich so niedlich er wollte mich adoptieren. Ich wusste nicht dass Kalter Krieg war, habe aber sie Zeit erlebt in der schwere Waffen offen von Frankfurt Main bis Mainz befördert wurden. Mir wurde damals nichts darüber erzählt. Ich weiß nicht was Frankfurt heute mit dem Geländer vor hatte, dennoch ist die Amerikanische Botschaft anwesend und immer mehr Amerikaner kristallisieren sich in Deutschland heraus.
